Between Souls - What does it mean?
Long before I decided to start my practice, I was attached to the name Between Souls.
Some of you may already know this, but I dabbled in writing years ago and had a plan for a series of young adult books about the usual things - a loner girl, two boys who both wanted to be with her, and a mystery about her lineage that meant she was destined to save the world. This was before I realized how non-inclusive and problematic the love triangle that I described could be. But I digress.
Even though I never finished the series, I always planned to call it Between Souls. The idea of overlapping timelines, past lives, and finding a way to connect despite the chaos in the world still appeals to me. Between Souls has changed through the years, and now it feels like an ethereal description of what we do in therapy when we meet and talk.
All of my experiences merged and blended to create the person I am in our sessions. In the same way, all of your experiences have merged and blended inside you, sometimes causing lingering stress, doubts, fears, or all of the above. By allowing me to see who you are now, you allow us to create a connection that is based on trust and respect. I take this connection very seriously, and I try to show that by honoring who you are, who you were, and who you want to be.
The conversations we have feel like a swirl of chaos at first, but eventually we get to a point where we find truths, patterns, and peace. If we don’t start with the safe connection, we can’t get to the place of sharing experiences and honest emotions.
I view these experiences, conversations, and connections like a swirl of colors, moving and changing, blending and creating new colors. For lack of a better expression, it feels like our souls find common ground between our experiences and help us find a way forward.
Although souls are typically discussed in religious ways, I experience a sense of peace when thinking that regardless of what we believe, there is an essence to everyone that needs a safe space to talk, think, and be understood. I hope that I create a safe space where we can allow for the honest sharing of our lives between our souls. And the rest, as they say, is history.
